Dr. Lana Trotter, Phd, LPC

Welcome to Whole Athlete Counseling. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in the state of Texas, working with teens, young adults, and adults. I received a Bachelor of Science in Psychology at the University of North Texas and immediately moved back home to complete a Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at the University of Texas at San Antonio. I then received my Doctorate of Philosophy in Counselor Education at Sam Houston State University, where I honed my counseling skills working with professional and collegiate athletes. I wrote my dissertation on the mental health experiences of NFL athletes, where I had the privilege to speak with former NFL athletes as they discussed how their mental health and athletic identity were shaped by the pressures that come with being an elite athlete.

The goal of this practice is to serve the mental health needs of the athlete community in developing a whole sense of self that encompasses all aspects of their lives. This also includes individuals in high-pressure settings such as attorneys, performance artists (i.e, dancers and gymnasts), students, and other professionals.

As a competitive athlete who was sidelined by chronic pain, I intimately know the depths of pain and grief that come with a life-changing injury, as well as the mental hurdles when you can no longer “be” the athlete you have always been.

Although the majority of my practice is with athletes, I enjoy working with clients from a variety of backgrounds, especially women and their partners who have experienced infertility, the loss of a child due to miscarriage, stillbirth, and navigating postpartum depression.

When I am not in the counseling room, you can find me spending time with my family and friends, playing tennis with my husband, and listening to music while enjoying a hot cup of tea.
