Frequently asked questions.

 FAQs

  • Sports psychology is concerned with performance excellence (i.e., getting the athlete back on the field post-injury or increasing scoring percentages in high-stress situations), and its application is not meant to alleviate mental health concerns. These services to optimize performance can be provided by psychologists, kinesiologists, business professionals, and doctors with varying backgrounds and training in mental health and trauma-informed approaches.

Sports counseling is a specialty within the counseling profession that recognizes and seeks to understand the unique stressors and experiences that come with being an athlete. Counselors work with athletes through a holistic approach, meaning that the person is prioritized over performance, by looking at all areas of life that contribute to mental well-being. Counselors’ specialized training in wellness, trauma, and clinical mental health issues can assist athletes in shaping their identity, overcoming challenges, and creating balance.
